Art Workers – Hiring is Hard

Hiring used to be easy

I thought it would be easy to hire people to work for Avant Garb Mascots, my small, arty, mascot-making company.

At first, it was easy . I was able to hire people who had grown up sewing, people who were crafty, people who had learned to sew on a sewing machine in school.

Now Hiring Art Workers is Hard

Now, in 2019, it’s hard. Schools are focused on tech, math and science.

At Avant Garb Mascots, we need people who know how to work and think with their hands, who know how to sew, how to sculpt, how to problem solve in 3 dimensions. I need people who make art, made puppets in summer camp, altered a pattern & sewed a dress, or a shirt in sewing class and caught the bug. People who had figure drawing classes so they can design mascot characters that a human can perform in.

What’s the solution?

One of the solutions, for us, has been to teach young people who are interested, committed and courageous.

I know there are other businesses like Avant Garb. How do you hire people?
